Distinct departments

CodingAlgorithms & data structuresEntry–Mid~10 min

To populate a dropdown filter, extract the department list from a raw HR export. Each row is "name, dept". Return the distinct department names, sorted alphabetically. Example: ["ava, eng", "raj, sales", "mia, eng"] gives ["eng", "sales"].

Implement
list_departments(rows: list[str]) → list[str]
Examples
in[["ava,eng","raj,sales","mia,eng"]]out["eng","sales"]
What a strong answer looks like

State your approach and its time/space complexity out loud before you optimize. Handle the edge cases (empty input, duplicates, overflow), and say why you chose this over the brute force. Green tests are the floor, not the grade.
