Gray code n-th value

CodingAlgorithms & data structuresMid–Senior~10 min

Return the n-th value (0-indexed) of the standard reflected binary Gray code sequence, for non-negative n. Consecutive Gray code values differ in exactly one bit, which makes them useful for error-resistant encoders and in some communication/position-sensing systems. The closed form is simply n XOR (n >> 1). Return that value.

Implement
gray_code(n: int) → int

What a strong answer looks like

State your approach and its time/space complexity out loud before you optimize. Handle the edge cases (empty input, duplicates, overflow), and say why you chose this over the brute force. Green tests are the floor, not the grade.
